Threat of starvation continues for many in Zimbabwe
A recent report from the World Food Organisation (WFO) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) into the food crisis in Zimbabwe has identified a worrying lack of sustainability for the coming year.
The joint report from the WFO and the FAO from May this year confirms that despite having improved, the food crisis in Zimbabwe remains severe. Whilst the report identifies an improvement in the grain harvest from 2008, it warns that there will continue to be a significant cereal defecit in the coming year with the lowest wheat harvest ever forcast. This will leave many Zimbabweans facing hunger and make them dependant on Internaitional aid and feeding schemes. The report estimates that around 2.8million people will suffer from food shortage in the country between April 2009 and March 2010.

Once referred to as the 'bread basket' of Africa, Zimbabwe is no longer able to provide for it's people. The crippling poverty experienced by the country over recent years has meant there is an alarming lack of basic food materials such as seeds and simple farm tools which are necessary for people to grow their own food thereby sustaining themselves.
After the sucess of the 2008/2009 Helping Hands seed planting scheme, the Zimbabwe Benefit Foundation is hoping to assist in funding the project yet again over the coming year. If you would like to support the scheme then please see the 'How to Help' section of our website.
